Enkhuizen – Zuiderzee Museum
June 21, 2016
After our visit at the town center, we are back at
the railway station. Here we take the museum
boat, which brings us to the outdoor part of the
Zuiderzee Museum.
The Zuiderzee Museum is a cultural historic
museum about the villages and people who
worked and lived around the Zuiderzee. In 1932
the Afsluitdijk was built and the Zuiderzee became
the IJsselmeer and Waddenzee. Beside this the
government started with the impoldering of large
parts of the IJsselmeer to create new land, for the
villages and the people living around the
Zuiderzee, this had an enormous impact. See also
the maps below.
The purpose of the museum is to tell the cultural
history of the people who lived at the
surroundings of the Zuiderzee but it also tells us
about the current water management in the
context of the climate changes and rising water
levels.
The Zuiderzee Museum has an indoor and an
outdoor part. The indoor museum is located at the
Wierdijk 18 in a former VOC storehouse for
pepper, the museum opened its doors in 1948.
Here you will find among other things the largest
collection of ships which sailed across the
Zuiderzee and ships models.
Can you please explain us what the connection is
between the museum and James Bond 007?
The outdoor part can only be reached by boat.
Coming of the boat, it feels like you are thrown
back in time. You walk through a small village, with
replica and reconstructed houses, church, shops,
school, farm houses, windmill etc. These buildings
(130 in total) stood somewhere else at the shores
of the Zuiderzee and have been removed to this
museum. In the buildings you will find the original
interior, so it feels really if you are visiting your
great grandparents. In some buildings one can find
people in traditions costumes explaining and
showing ancient crafts or one is invited to
participate an ancient craft.
At the fish smokehouse you can buy and eat
different kind of fish. We ate a delicious traditional
French fries and enjoyed the scenery.
We had a really good time and after we had spent
a few hours walking through the “village”, we took
the boat back to the railway station.
